There are current locking times on Waterscape, but I can't vouch
personally for their accuracy. It's a few months since we last went down
on the river (and then we went upstream :-) ), nearly got caught by the
heavy rain around when a boat got stuck on Sutton Weir.

For pubs, go downstream to Acton Bridge and The Horns or the Leigh Arms,
or a longer walk to the Hollybush - if you can make your first day a
weekend day, the locks are open later.

For rural quiet spots, try to get above Vale Royal locks or below Dutton
Locks (although if your lift passage is a late one you may not make the
locks in time).

Is this the Virgo that Harral's were selling?
