_When we went up Wigan last May we were advised by BW, having spent a quiet
night at the junction with the Leigh Branch, to leave early and get beyond
the fourth lock before school time. As we had a 90 year old with us we
couldn't start that early so left at 8.30 and by the time we got to the
school area the little darlings were all at their lessons. We had a
completely trouble free trip up and made the pub at the top lock just in
time for lunch,_which was most welcome. After spending a quiet night at the
top lock we read in Nicholson's that we shouldn't !!
The recent surfing reports made the national press at the weekends with a
story that 'local kids were forcing the big gates open and riding the wave'.
Now I definitely don't believe everything I read in the papers.
