Being moored on the Rufford branch we have been up and down the Wigan
flight many times over the last three years - the next time will be
down on Friday 9th July. Have never yet had any trouble. There are
always lockeepers about who will set locks ahead for you as long as
you're there during their working day. It always seems to take us
about 4 hours now matter how much we rush or dawdle so now we just
dawdle. The flight takes a bit of effort but it's nothing like it was
when I first used it in the 70s and is much easier than the Rochdale 9
in Manchester for example. All the locks have push button anti-vandal
locks, which are a great improvement on the handcuff keys to the west
of Wigan.

The only trouble I've come across in the Wigan area was three years
ago when my son and two mates took the boat from Rufford into
Manchester. At Pagefield lock (by the JJB Stadium) a kid got on the
front of the boat, picked up the mallet that Sam had left there and
smashed the cratch window and frame before they could chase him off.
