Day 7 - Friday 30th June 2006

It was a noisy night, lorries all night long coming and going from the yard
across the canal. I woke with passing boats at 9:30, Dad remained in bed
until 11:00. At 12:30 we went up the hill to Hanley to buy an Orange mobile
phone. After wondering around the shopping centre (which is where most of
the phone shops are) we ended up at the first we went to!

Once back at the boat we set off up the Caldon. Just as we reached the
junction, another boat came out of the lock, and basically pulled in front
of us. They did apologise later however. We reached the staircase, and
waited ages for the first boat to get up, because the previous boat had left
the top paddles open.

We reached The Foxley pub, when we realised it might be a good place to
leave my sister's car for the next two weeks when she joins us tomorrow. We
tied temporary up to a BW work flat.

A 70ft hire boat came along the canal, with two crew members walking up the
towpath. They said they were going to turn around here - though I thought
they were turning at the previous corner (they ended up across the canal).
They asked us to move, even though there was plenty of space. We moved back,
and they spend some time turning around, even though we could have stayed
where we were.

They said they were going to moor here and go to the pub, so we moved back
up to the workflat, mooring just behind it. As the bloke brought the boat
into the mooring behind as he brought the boat to a stop, but the bow was
sliding back out a little. He put it in forward, and then suddenly went full
power. The water jet flew straight through the open back doors and splashed
my GPS, and the echo sounder. We never did get an apology, and when I
explained why you didn't need to rev the engine when manouvering in close
quarters he just said the bow was coming back out. The fact that there was a
crew member at the bow, and someone on the back at the front had nothing to
do with it. He didn't even hold the tiller over to get the bow back in!

Anyway, I've now got my cheap mobile internet working, so I'm happy.
