I've seen a Great Crested newt at Calcutt locks - they're most easily 
recognised by the fact they are black on top, yellow with black spots 
underneath (as in Sir Isaac Newton in Jeremy Fisher) - other kinds are 
greeny-brown on top and about 4" total length, as opposed to 6" for the 
GC.

The main reason for the more sophisticated methods in a survey is to 
show definitely whether they are present or not - if random dipping 
doesn't catch any they may be there, but not where you dipped!
