It was to be made navigable above Langport uner an Act of 1795, but the 
project was abandoned in 1797.  A later Act was passed in 1836 to imporve 
the river from Burrow Bridge to Thorney and add a canal to Westport, 
Completed 1840.  In decline from 184 in competition with railway schemes. 
Formally ab andoned in 1878 although bats did reach Langpot and Ilchester 
after 1900.
