Day 18 - Tuesday July 18th - Dunhampstead to Bevere Lock 11 miles 3 furlongs, 16 locks, 7 hours 35 minutes
Long lie in this morning, ten o'Clock before I surfaced. Breakfast and some engine room sorting out meant it was midday before I set off. Not the best of plans, as the sun is heading for its highest in a cloudless sky (again). Steady chugging saw me at the top of Offerton flight by 12.50pm, and out of the bottom by 2.05pm. The remaining locks down to Worcester are a bit more spread out, so no chance for any advance lock setting. Into Diglis Basin at 5.50pm and after finding the lock keeper I worked through the two locks to the river by 6.25pm. Met a couple on a boat that I had passed a week earlier in the Aston flight in Birmingham. Out on the river I made my way to Bevere Lock. Since there was no chance of getting there before the lock closed for the night I didn't bother rushing. Anyway, in this heat who needs to (or indeed can be bothered to) rush anywhere. Phoned the Camp House Inn as I was approaching Bevere lock to find out when last orders for food was. I was told it was 8pm, and so since it was nearly 7.40pm when I tied up, I headed straight there without bothering to stop for a shower - Ugh. When I got there and asked for the menu, I was told that they had stopped taking food orders at 7.30pm this evening, because it was so busy. I ask you, what is the point of phoning ahead if all you get is duff info. I consoled myself by drinking a pint of Batham's, with a cheese salad baguette that they had.
