Day 28 - Friday 20th July 2006
I got up early today, even though I didn't get a very good nights sleep - either too hot, or too noisy, or both! We were off for 9:30, and arrived just in time to share the lock at Cranfleet with another boat. They were going down the Trent for the first time, on their way to the Lancaster. They had a nice sounding Russell Newbury 2 cylinder engine, which pushed them nicely along at 6 mph flat out - mind you it had twice the capacity as our 1.7 litre engine! We left them chugging along the river section, as they were in no rush, and said we shouldn't wait for them at the next lock, which we didn't as they were not in sight. By the time we had done a quick shop, and got some MacDonnell's they had caught us up, and again we followed them in the next lock after they had got it ready. Again they said "don't wait for us", but they stayed quite close along the canal as we could not go faster anyway, and shared Meadow Lane Lock with us. After going to the other side of the river, and leaving his wife stranded at the lock side, he went back to pick her up, and went to have a look up river as we sped downstream. We had a little wait at Holme for a dutch barge to come up, and out of the lock, but no other delays down to Cromwell, and we just kept going till Dunham, arriving at 21:20. We had to work out the best route back home, and since Keadby no longer opens on Sunday, we are going to go around to Goole, and get out that way! --- Mike Askin nb.
