Day 23 - Sunday July 23rd - Netherton to Wolverhampton
9 miles 6 furlongs, 3 locks, 5 hours 40 minutes
After chatting with local boaters some more, and buying and changing a
bottle of gas, I set off for Wolverhampton at midday. A slow run
through Netherton, as I didn't want to completely fill it with diesel
fumes. :-) Passed two boats and five walkers heading South through the
tunnel, and was overtaken by two cyclists! First time I've seen either
pedestrians or cyclists going through the tunnel. Turned left at Dudley
Port Junction at 1.20pm, and whilst the water was initially clear, as I
approached Tipton it became more and more infested with blanket weed.
Forward progress which was already slow was reduced to an impossible
crawl before I finally threw in the towel and went down the weed hatch
yet again. Got through the first lock by 2.25, so, after allowing ten
minutes for the weed hatch visit, I wasn't actually going all that
slowly. Both the intermediate pounds seemed very low, but there was
still sufficient water for me to get by. Out of the top lock at 3.05pm,
passage of which was used for YAWHV (Yet Another Weed Hatch Visit). The
remaining 5 and a bit miles to Wolverhampton were somewhat slower,
mostly down to weed problems. It took me until 6pm to reach the top
lock, a speed of less than 2MPH. I may end up spending a day or two
here, as I need to get this engine issue sorted out before I go much
further. Stayed on board this evening, catching up with emails and the
like.
