Depends upon how he hooted - he may have been simply asking your
intentions (5 short blasts), but as this was on a canal I bet he was
not.

Had an interesting situation on Friday.

Following a Challenger boat downstream from Caversham with a bit of
upstream traffic. Challenger boat went into reverse near Tescos and
appeared to be trying to back into a mooring space that was clearly
too small.

He made much use of gears and bowthruster whilst I tried to keep
stationary in the streaam - lucky there was not much flow. The
Challenger boat now had his bows swinging out into the centre of the
river as if he was going to motor away and turn upstream, except he
did not, he just kept thrashing about.

I was not sure what to do , so I blew 5, the result of which I got a
glare. Luckily the upsteam traffic had cleared so I could pass him on
the "wrong" side of the river.

I fail to see why he could not have indicated he was happy to be
passed by waving me through when he stared his manouvering. I just
hope that I always will.
