I guess it is just inexperience - I find most private boaters are
worse than hireboaters these days because as they own the boat they
think they are right in doing what they are doing, even when they
aren't! (If you see what I mean)

Lets face it how many inland boaters know what sound signals are, so
perhaps a little hoot from you when he started his manoeuvre might
have reminded him there were other boats about, without intimidation.

There is plenty of room near Tescos, and I'm sure if an upstream boat
saw you coming around they would move further over, especially if it
was one of these white plastic ones! :-)
