OK. I'll take on the challenge.

Entering just the Hockley Heath to Budbrooke Junction part of the joutney
(where you have suggested there is a problem), the planner returns a total
of 38 locks. As you say, there are actually 40, so there's certainly a
problem.

To try to identify what it might be, I'll split the journey at Shrewley
Tunnel.

[pause]

Hockley Heath to Shrewley Tunnel - planner says 16 locks - it should be
19

Shrewley Tunnel to Budbrooke - planner says 22 locks - it should be 21

So both parts of it are wrong! I'm going to look closely at the first half
of the journey.

[pause]

Hockley Heath to Shrewley Tunnel Itinerary lists the following locks:

Lapworth Top Lock No 2.
Lapworth Lock No 3.
Lapworth Lock No 4.
Lapworth Lock No 5.
Lapworth Lock No 6.
Lapworth Lock No 7.
Lapworth Lock No 8.
Lapworth Lock No 9.
Lapworth Lock No 10.
Lapworth Lock No 11.
Lapworth Lock No 12.
Lapworth Lock No 13.
Lapworth Lock No 14.
Lapworth Lock No 15.
Lapworth Lock No 16.
Lapworth Lock No 17.
Lapworth Lock No 18.
Lapworth Lock No 19.
Lapworth Link Lock.

That's the 19 locks - so it's the addition of them that is faulty.

According to the FAQs the planner works on the principle that in making a
journey to a lock, you don't pass through it - so, not surprisingly it
shows 0 locks against Lapworth Lock No 2 (the first lock encountered). The
same principle applies down to Lapworth Lock No 6, which is arrived at after
4 locks. But here we have the first problem - there is no increment at
Lapworth Lock No 7, which is also shown as 4 locks travelled.

There is then an increment for each subsequent lock down to Lapworth Lock 14
(shown as 11 locks travelled), but then we come to the second problem in
that there is no increment for Lock 14 and Lapworth Wharf (below Lock 14) is
also shown as 11 locks travelled. There is similarly no increment for
Lapworth Lock No 15, so arrival at Lock 16 is again shown to be 11 locks
from Hockley Heath. This error is continued through to the Link Lock and
hence to Shrewley Tunnel.

So that's that sorted - although I should also say that I noticed that the
'Descended Lapworth Locks (middle) - flight of 4 locks' marker is wrongly
placed after Lock 19 by the planner - it should be after Lock 18.

[pause]

So, on to the Shrewley Tunnel --> Budbrooke Section.

Once again, all the locks are correctly listed in the Itinerary:

Hatton Top Lock No 46.
Hatton Lock No 45.
Hatton Lock No 44.
Hatton Lock No 43.
Hatton Lock No 42 (Hatton Yard Lock).
Hatton Lock No 41.
Hatton Lock No 40.
Hatton Lock No 39.
Hatton Lock No 38.
Hatton Lock No 37.
Hatton Lock No 36.
Hatton Lock No 35.
Hatton Lock No 34.
Hatton Lock No 33.
Hatton Lock No 32.
Hatton Lock No 31.
Hatton Lock No 30.
Hatton Lock No 29.
Hatton Lock No 28.
Hatton Lock No 27.
Hatton Bottom Lock No 26.

That's 21 locks - so it's a little surprising to see that Nick has added
a 'Descended Hatton flight of 22 locks' after the Bottom Lock - doesn't
everybody know that there are only (only?) 21 locks in the Hatton Flight.
(Perhaps he discovered that there were 22 from reference to his own
planner!!)
;-)

So where is the problem?

To cut to the chase, everything is fine until Hatton Lock No 36 - that is
arrived after 10 locks have been travelled - and having been through that
lock, Hatton Middle Lock Bridge is encountered with 11 locks having being
travelled. But here we find the problem - Hatton Middle Lock Bridge is
for some reason given the status of a lock and increments the total so that
Hatton Lock No 35 is reached after 12 locks have been travelled.

This error is then carried to the bottom of the flight and to Budbrooke
Junction.

So there we have it.

[pause and breath]

I will communicate these findings to Nick in case he doesn't pick them up
from here. I expect he will be very pleased about the work he will have to
do to correct them, but I'll explain to him that it is all Beeky's fault and
the rest of us were happy with the way things are now.
