I'm not sure if Steve's interested in whether there's a plaque there now, or
whether there's ever been one there. But I can confirm that one was definitely
installed in 2002 during the nearby IWA National Festival - I was there, and I
have the photos to prove it.
I believe it commemorated the construction of the canal, and the workmen who
lost their lives in the process.
I'm not sure how they would have taken to the idea of being commemorated on the
wall of a bog-emptying station - but I guess anything's better than the amount
of commemoration that deceased canal navvies normally got...
