Oooo, what sort of Lister?  Not renound for their quietness are they!  The 
less number of cylinders then the more the vibration and noise - it doesn't 
really smooth out until 4 cylinders or more.  Betsey is fitted with a 3 cyl 
water cooled diesel and that throbs the boat quite a bit.
I take it that it's also air cooled...  Every cooling fin on the engine will 
vibrate and make noise (why motorbikes are usually noiseier than cars - 
unless they are water cooled).
