                  GLOUCESTER & SHARPNESS, THAMES &
                    SEVERN and STROUDWATER CANALS

Saturday 7th/ Sunday 8th October 10.30am OS 162/755094

This weekend’s outing takes us to the lower Severn valley to look at
three very different canals. The Saturday walk will be on the Gloucester
and Sharpness Ship Canal of 1827 which bypassed the treacherous
bends on the River Severn.

On Sunday we will walk the Stroudwater/Thames and Severn of 1779
which carried Forest of Dean coal to London.

Saturday.

At Saul Junction the G&S formed a unique crossroads with the
Stroudwater and it is here that we will meet for the Saturday walk. Park
beyond the heritage centre on the large car park by the sculling club.
>From here we will car shuffle to Purton Upper Bridge from where the
walk starts.

Lunch will be at the Three Horseshoes at Frampton on Severn, a homely
village pub.

The walk, which is 6.5 miles long, should finish around 4pm. Giving us
good time to look around the heritage centre (good book selection) and
junction area.

The Saturday evening social will be at the Tudor Arms, Shepherd’s
Patch. It boasts fine real ales and a food menu to suit all pockets.

Sunday.

On Sunday we will meet in the bijou car park by Pikes Lock (Os
162/784061). Overflow parking has been arranged with the Cotswold
Canals Trust in their adjacent plant yard. From here we will car shuffle to
Brimscombe Port from where the walk starts.

Lunch will be in the Wallbridge area where the Bell Hotel (no food) is
canalside and the Clothiers Arms (full menu) is 5 minutes away.

There may be posted diversions on this walk due to the imminent
restoration work.

The walk is 7 miles long and should finish at 4pm.

As always waterproofs and sturdy footwear are recommended.

Travel: Both venues are close to M5 Junction 13.

For Saul. Go west on A419 to A38. Go left, then after 0.5 miles go right
onto B4071. Follow this to Frampton on Severn, then turn right opposite
the village green. From here follow yellow heritage centre signs to
Sandfield Bridge. The car park is along the canalside road after the
bridge.

For Pikes Lock. Go east from M5 J13 on A419. At Westend
Roundabout go right onto Springhill and turn left within 50yds by a lock
house into a linear car park.
