A not so early start got us to Iffley lock just after 9 AM where six boats
were packed in for the ascent. We continued through Osney lock where we said
goodbye to Albion as they were going through Jerico whilst we were taking
the Dukes cut route onto the Oxford canal. We arrived at Dukes lock just in
front of Albion so there isn't much difference between the two routes apart
from the landscape.
It had been over two weeks since we were last on a canal and it took a bit
of time to get used to the bottom being a lot closer to the top again.
We had queues of about three boats at every lock up to the old Kirtlington
quarry where we stopped for the night. Lots of blackberries were picked
whilst queuing for locks and blackberry vinegar and muffins have been made
by Brenda (having traded the promise of completed muffins for the essential
ingredient we were missing, eggs, from the boat moored behind us ;^)
We shared our overnight mooring with, amongst others, John and Phil Saxon on
nb Lion. They were both born 'on the boats' and he was one of the last
working boatmen who worked his mothers boat until quite late.
They borrowed our internet connection to check for cheap flights to
Carcasson where they are going boating in October.
