It's worth bearing in mind that, at a rough guess, about half the 
currently used dry-docks go back to working days (there is not a lot to 
go wrong with a hole in the ground) and there's a tendency to stick with 
known designs. However, as my boat has a round bilge, I use a yard which 
cranes it out.

Practice is quite different in yards which deal mainly with sea-going 
and river craft, which are proportionately much lighter - they are 
usually craned. Traditional sea-going practice was to maintain between 
tides, on 'hards' if the bottom was muddy.
