I believe this derives from an occasion when an Australian at
Leicester station mispronounced his destination when asking when the
next train to your birthplace would depart. So, perhaps not
disrespect, but merely ignorance?

Dunno. But (sticking to local waterway places in a vain attempt to
remain on topic) Southwark is pronounced "suthark". Southall, OTH, is
pronounced "south all".
Where is Southwick, anyway?
As a Canadian, though, you will surely know how to pronounce
"Toronto". But how about "Pouce Coupé" (B.C.)?
