I'll own up to making that decision back in my Waterscape days. Either we could 
have put it 
all as "River Trent". Or we could have had separate waterway pages for "River 
Trent", 
"Nottingham Canal (navigable section)" (which would presuppose "Nottingham 
Canal 
(unnavigable section)"), "Beeston Cut", etc. etc. ad infinitum, or at least, ad 
Pons Cavendish 
in Shardlovium. And you'd have had to check four stoppage pages instead of one.

Somehow it seemed a lot easier to describe it all as the River Trent.

I guess the really correct and pedantic solution would have been to call it the 
Trent 
Navigation, but then, Waterscape's target audience is a bit less knowledgeable 
about 
waterway names than most people on this list, and "Trent Navigation" isn't a 
very 
meaningful term if you're planning a walking or cycling trip.
