Graham W pointed out 'Well we were all learners once...'
And we can all be teachers too, but you have to be sure your 'pupils' are up
for it.
Last year we met some novices who were squiffy to say the least: it hadn't
even occurred to them to wear shoes lockside, and upon being reminded that
if we were to 'remind' them what to do, as they had asked us, they'd better
bring windlasses. The crewmember who ran back to get one came back with 2
mooring spikes. Sweet.
However, teach them we did and they soon got ahead of us with safety and
efficiency. When we caught up with them they were so pleased with their new
skills that they went out of their way to bring us cake.
On the other hand we have made relevant and subtle 'serving suggestions' to
other crews and been told where we can insert the likes of a mooring pin.
Homework: try to teach/show non-English speakers how to descend a staircase.
