I'm still for it, and have never had a boat wider the 6'10".  I guess that 
anyone who's been moored on the Lea and Stort for many years (like us) will 
also favour the "leave them open" rule.  Because we *know* it easier!  Even 
on the Stort which has minimal traffic, it's still a benefit - you can do 
all the lock movement plans you like - we know what is easier.  And if the 
gates are leaking BW very, very quickly paint "Shut All Gates" on the 
balance beam - it happened at Tednambury a few times, which used to cause 
great moaning in the marina, about having to shut the bl**dy gates...
