We (the Claverton team) looked at this when we did Hatton. There were a
couple that still had the gear part of a ratchet mechanism (just behind
the square that the windlass goes on, presumably they get removed as the
squares get worn and are replaced) and you can clearly see on most of
them where the pawl was bolted onto the casting but that the casting has
broken. Obviously it was a weak point, hence the later "bodge" (which
does work well...).
I'm sure a certain Mr Bruce Pecket reckoned he had some early literature
on them when we last discussed it (or maybe it was the time before) :-)
