Several canals were used for demolition practice by the military - the Wey & 
Arun, Wilts & Berks, etc.  I remember seeing in the Chichester Canal 
newsletter that there may still be mines in the filled-in bridge where the 
A286 crosses the canal.  The only reason that Salisbury Plain is so good for 
nature is that it's too dangerous for the public to go there...
