Hmm. AIUI, the largest future source of oil (an amount comparable to
that under Saudi Arabia) for the USA is the Athabaska tar sands. I
find it distressingly easy to imagine a scenario where the USA would
invade Canada to "protect" this from a Canadian government with
characteristics the USA didn't like. Although I must admit the great
lakes are quite a way from Fort Mcmurray, and navigation on the
Saskatchewan rivers is somewhat seasonal.
