There are a number of powerplants that exploit the water from the
Erie Canal. In Lowell Mass the canals still have locks but are rarely
used except by the National Park Service for Maintaince boats and
Chinease Dragon Boat festivals.(They have a Cambodian ethnic
population that has festivals out teh yazoo each summer and fall). The
locks are used to regulate water power to the Mills that use the water
for power and heating and cooling.
