Thanks to all who offered such helpful remarks on this one. Only one 
thing now - presumably  uric acid deposits would need a basic rather 
than acidic solvent, so I should have kept a bit of the scale for 
diagnostic testing. Would a sodium hydroxide bleach take them out, and 
would it attack the rubber components of the system?
