Assuming the M3 is a similar layout to the M2 and M4, there is a relay 
mounted at the back of the engine. There is also a fuse there. Both can give 
problems, as they are subject to vibration, and can also get damp. The cut 
out is electrical. On the previous incarnation of the M4 in "Copperkins", 
the cut out was "Apply voles to cut fuel", but the new M4 requires 
electrickery to keep the engine running. I think it depends on whether the 
fuel pump is electric or mechanical.

The above is the standard set up, with Vetus panel and connecting loom.
