I would have thought there was much to be said for stopping at Thrupp 
and getting a bus into Oxford.

It makes a big difference if you can get up early (say at 6) and get 2-3 
hours on the move before the queues start at locks. As there are often 
quite long pounds, the first up can get the boat moving while the others 
get up and have breakfast. For example, we started from Aynho aiming for 
Cropredy, got there at 1 p.m. and went on to Fenny Compton where we 
arrived in plenty of time for a leisurely meal. We cleared some locks in 
five minutes which had taken an hour on the journey down.
