The Wey & Arun runs through what seems to be have been a colony of ageing rock stars a few years ago. The three then members of Genesis (Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks) all lived nearby, and I think a couple more including possibly Ringo Starr did too. No idea if any of them are still in the area, but it isn't necessarily a good thing for the restoration if they are. When you're trying to persuade the locals to come around to your way of thinking regarding reopening the canal, what you don't want is landowners who (a) moved there for a quiet life and (b) have enough money that they won't necessarily be the slightest bit interested in selling land for restoration or in what the restored waterway can do in raising local house prices, increasing prosperity of the area etc etc. Martin
