Sounds a bit far fetched... Typical gas bottle for that size boat would probably be 13kg or bigger, and have a left hand screw thread. Not the easist thing to undo (and throw) in a haste - unless there was an unconnected spare - but not in a steel locker...?. Maybe it was the genny or the spare petrol can he threw in the cut? Maybe someone set it on fire if there was no one on board? I agree that it's probably not gas - that gives a boom!
