Or in a nutshell - obtain these first...
1. Get a good news reading software. I plumped for NewsRover (allows
multiple connections and multiple news servers at same time), there are
others that are favoured by some here - must support Yenc encoding, used by
almost all movie downloads, should also support NZB files (an index of all
the messages that will re-create the movie file)
2. Get a good news server - the cheap or free ones have very poor
retention - i.e you start downloading a movie and by the time you get to the
later parts its vanished. Personal choice is Astraweb, no time limit, just
PAYG, and reasonable rate - current offer of 90GB for 25USD IIRC. 25days
retention minimum.
3. Get Winrar from RarLabs. Once you get used to it, dump Winzip - winrar
will do both.
4. Get SmartPar and QuickPar (both free). Most movie files are sent with
some extra PAR or PAR2 files - they are created from a multi-dimentional RS
parity matrix, and the more you get the more the program can repair missing
parts of the main files http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Par2
5. (Optional) subscription to http://www.newzbin.com (with a 'Z') - 25p per
week. Big index of all the binary newsgroups - will create NZBs for you to
download whatever takes your fancy.

So with the above in place.... For me to download a movie.... (or any
mutli-part binary)
1. Get the NZB file
2. Start NewsRover.
3. Double click the NZB, NewsRover shows contents and I hit the button to
download.
4. Wait until all downloaded (typical time on 1000 connection = 3h per GB).
(note your ISPs T&Cs for AUP - Pipex for example frowns on mega downloads
from 6pm to midnight - so I start at midnght).
5. Go to received directory, double click on any PAR or PAR2 file that came
with movie - the program will check movie and give the the option to repair
(if needed, and if possible) - and may also join up the movie if it has been
split with QuickPar rather than Winrar
6. If movie is in rar files then double click on the first rar and extract
the movie. If normal movie then play OR....
7. If movie is an iso or mds, or bin... etc - (CD/DVD image files), then
you might have to make a CD/DVD or mount with a virtual drive.
8. If movie is a series of VOB, IFO, - that's a DVD and can be played with
DVD software.
9. If movie is something like mpegseq.dat - that's a VCD - not very often
these days (use No.2 below)

Other tools you might want to consider (I use these)...
1. DVDshrink - forces a dual layer DVD9 into a DVD5 format
2. UltraIso - converts between iso and mds and bin and cue, etc. Also
extracts from said image files.
3. VSO ConvertX to DVD - does what it says, any movie format to DVD
4. Xilisoft Video Convertor - converts any movie format into another.
5. DVDdecryptor - copy and remove encryption from bought DVDs (only to make
your personal backups of course!)
6. VideoDUB - for the experienced user only, not user friendly, but can do
wonders to AVI files - edit, change video compression, audio compression,
change sync of audio time (No.3 will do that as well, it's very trial and
error in both!), size, crop.
7. VideoReDo - if you want to edit mpegs and view and cut at the frame
level, so not to chop the audio.
8. Join32.exe - free IIRC will join up split movies that haven't been split
with QuickPar or Winrar - not often needed.
