[Default] On Sat, 10 Feb 2007 13:30:41 +0000, "Steve Haywood" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> finished tucking into their plate of fish, chips and mushy peas. Wiping their mouth, they swiggged the last of their cup of tea, paid the bill and wrote::
>LOL! What you say is true, Roger. On this list, at least. But not, >thankfully, in the outside world. Congestion isn't engineered; it's >something that comes about as a result of increased road use. In >London we accepted the congestion charge on behalf of all of you >because the situation had become intolerable in our city as it will >eventually in yours. One of the things that makes living in London at least partially bearable is the public transport system: you've got one! All right, it gets congested and some might say it's not as good as it was 30 or 40 years ago, but at least it works (most of the time) (except the Underground at weekends - you try getting to Mornington Crescent!). Here in Derbyshire, I've got one bus an hour to Derby - getting to Nottingham involves at least one change of bus, and the journey time is nearly twice what it'd take in the car. If I could rely on the trains, I could get a train from Ambergate to Derby, but there's no bus service to Ambergate: I could get a train to Nottingham from Alfreton, but it'd take two buses to get to the station. So, I keep the car and cough up with a fixed smile on my face, coz I ain't got a choice!
