That was in the 1770s.  As far as I can make out, the line was some way to 
the north of the Caldon Canal, which dates from the same era.

A bit later, in the 1790s.

I'm in the wrong place to check my reference books  at the moment, but both 
canals are marked on the waterways history maps on my site, so Imust have 
read about them somewhere.  Mu main sources of information for these were 
the Hadfield series of regional canal history, and Edward Paget-Tomkinson's 
enclycopedic work which has recently been republished.
