We tried just turning up... the lock was a) locked and b) I got a 
roasting from Mr N for not letting them know. Coming back we phoned 
ahead from Salter's Lode, overnighted at Upwell, but still had to hang 
around at Marchmont while Mrs N did a school run.

Oh - and allow loads of time for the stretch between Upwell and 
Salter's, it's very shallow and *slow*.
