>>> how many canals in the Midlands will he be able to cruise in a barge

Probably very unlikely I would have thought - but Adrian did hit a hot
button - I'd love a barge for sure; had we lived near the sea, I would be
looking to convert a trawler and heading for the Norwegian Fjords.
Unfortunately, I think the wider beam is for 15 years time when the kids
have flown the nest and we're on adventure #2 - unless we really can cruise
50%+ canal network on a wider beam for under £100k? Probably not.

Back to a 6 foot 10 inch life then.. Wendy (wife and a lurker here) has been
here: http://www.canals.com/canaldata.htm and suggests that we really ought
to keep to the plan and get something that can actually cruise narrow locks
etc.

* Question: Assuming that a 70 footer really will work and I'm not going to
sink it catching the stern on the cill on the first tight lock (is it a
cill, yes?) then can I build it 2 inches wider right up to 7 feet? I say
this because if it's going to be big, I might as well live the life of a
squeezed pencil..?

Remind me, Adrian, how many canals in the Midlands will he be able to
cruise in a barge?
