THE INLAND WATERWAYS PROTECTION SOCIETY LTD
HORNCASTLE CANAL WALK
10.15 AM. SATURDAY 4TH AUGUST 2007
Saturday´s walk takes us to the Horncastle Canal in deepest Lincolnshire. We
shall
meet at the junction of The Elms and Church Lane in Kirkby-on-Bain (TF242623)
at
10.15 a.m. from where we shall take half the cars to the Tesco car park off
Water
Mill Road in Horncastle for the start of the walk. We will need c£1.50 for each
car,
unless we spot some off-road parking nearby in Prospect Street
(TF247698).
We shall then inspect the two town basins before heading south, diverting as
necessary round Martin and Dalderby before rejoining the route of the
navigation
from Haltham to Kirkby. Lunch will be taken at the Ebrington Arms in the
village
(real ale and bar food available: 01526 354560), during which time we shall
rescue
the cars from Horncastle.
In the afternoon we shall drive down to Tattershall where we will hope to park
in
the National Trust car park (free: TF212576) before taking a minimum of cars up
to
Coningsby where we can park up at the junction of Hunters Lane and Wharf Lane
(TF225585).
>From here we follow the navigation down from Coningsby Lock to the weir where
the canal veered right off the River Bain on towards the old Gibson´s Cut.
Depending on how people feel we can do any or all of walking a little way down
the
Bain, searching out remains of the old Granary Arm, visiting Tattershall Castle
(£4.20 for non-NT Members) and watching jets going in and out of the airfield.
The afternoon walk is less than 1.5 miles but the morning walk as envisaged is
around 5.75 miles. If participants feel this is a bit long we can miss out the
Basins
in Horncastle and peg it at just under 5 miles, by parking near the Bowling
Club
(accessed off the A153 South Street, signposted free parking). I am happy to
decide as necessary on the day, but if you have strong views then better let me
know beforehand!
Ring Andy Screen on 07809 717916 anytime the preceding week but ideally by 9
p.m. on Friday 3rd August.
