In Windoze I always use Alt-xxx or Alt-0xxx (there are two systems - typical

MS) [that's hold down Alt key while typing the digits on the numpad, with
the numlock on]. Once you know the codes (they are mainly ASCII for the
Alt-xxx series), it's a piece of cake. Two I always remember are degree
(Alt248 ¡) and e acute (used to work for French company, Alt130 Ž), and the
old hash # comes up at as Alt035 - also known as a pound in some parts of
the world.

My three most useful ones are Alt-0188, Alt-0189 and Alt-0190, which are ¼,
½ and ¾.
