Monday am our new crew turned up. Two wrgies and one dog. Ben was very wary and
hid behind Roger but Cam, a staffy, has grown mellow with age and no longer
wants to fight. Taking on our daughter's dog may have something to do with
this. Helen had an Akita/Alsatian who picked Cam up by the head and then looked
at Helen as if to say 'what do I do with this'.
The wergies had done the car shuffle with one car at Newbury and one at
Hungerford so off we went. The little boat was behaving itself and so we were
again able to go separately. If something isn't done with the K & A soon it
won't be long before it's a narrow canal. There are reed beds that make passing
impossible.
Wire lock had the spill weir being repaired and the level was 18" down. It
looked as though the level is going to be permanently lower, but we shall see
on our return. Higgs lock had workmen trying to replace the landing stage, this
had been completely washed away. I say trying, as there was a steady stream of
boats both ways preventing any work being done.
We couldn't moor at Hungerford below the lock so tied up above in time to see a
boat move off the wharf moorings.
One wrgies is going home for the night, the other is sleeping on our boat. He
took one look at the little boat's sleeping arrangements and turned it down.
I am really not surprised.
