Canals and waterwaysIt will be interesting to find out what they tell us (4 Americans/4 Brit novices) on hand over. If I remember what they say, I'll let you know.
I am hoping that being on this list will have given me/us some insight into what to expect. Watch out - we will be on the GU 22 Sept starting at Bridge 49 and heading toward the Hatton flight on day 2. Jane nb Verysoon Some points, with which you may already be familiar:- Going up the Hatton locks, open the paddle *on the same side as the boat* cautiously, until the flow holds the boat against the same side - allow about 15 sec for the flow to come through. Once the boat is stabilised, open the paddle progressively further, then the one on the other side. On these locks (only!) you can just knock the C-shaped holding device off the spindle and let the paddle drop - they are designed for this, and it saves a lot of winding. Lock landings on the Stratford can be shallow, though this should not be a problem with a hireboat - with a large crew, having someone setting ahead and someone shutting up behind is worthwhile. I assume you have a map, such as the one off the BW website? Given that I live locally, I would hope to get to any Beeky-organised mini-GIG! Sean
