BARRY HOLLAND explained that

On both occasions I've moored there before, I was in-line with the bank!

And everyone heard the kerplosh as the penny dropped! I now see.

The pontoon style moorings have increased their capacity no end. although
there is some room for linear mooring between the pontoons and the bridge
but this is often occupied by the Hotel Boats.

A few months back I don't think they were worried about where they were
moored just that they hadn't been washed away or that when they came back
down again they were on the wet stuff and not the hard stuff.

The 360 degree site link I sent is a very good representation of the current
basin although I seem to recall the lock landing stage from which the
photograph was taken did not appear to be there (maybe due to the floods) as
the crew of the locking up boat did not get back on straight away after the
lock, but went round to meet it as it moored.

I also came across an early TNC report detailing Neil and Julian's (plus
wives) hire boat cruise of 1982 which was enlightening as to how much had
changed. Although I am struggling to recall where the Greek Restaurant is in
Stratford.
