I've never been keen on bresating up myself, whether I'm the steerer or 
not. I prefer to use the "two boats one gate" system.   To work 
efficiently this depends on the other steerer being able to either come 
out of the "wrong" gate or being able to go in via the "wrong" gate and 
tuck behind the oher gate neatly.   Usually easier if the less 
experienced steerer does the exit manoeuvre.   It also reduces  the 
amount of work for the lock workers.
