In fact, water levels are little
lower than normal, we touching the bottom when moored up Ely
waterfront. It could be low water,
January/February is the time when Essex & Suffolk Water Co extract large
volumes of water from the Ely Ouse to fill the reservoir at Abberton (and
at?East Hanningfield?) so that we poor people who live in an area of Essex
where the annual rainfall is much less than 30 inches a year have enough water
to soak our lawns in the summer.? ;-)
Apparently they choose this time of the year because the nitrate run-off from
neighbouring fields on the route down to Essex (Ouse, Stour, Chelmer?&
Blackwater + culverts and ditches) is at its lowest. Around Sudbury, the Stour
sometimes?flows backwards at one point because the extraction point is about
100 metres *above* the point where the water from the Ouse?is put into the
Stour and at its peak there isn't enough water in the Stour to satisfy the
extraction.
