One thing though: in the song "I'm a hardworking boater" comes the
lines "Meself and the missus has nearly been drowned/Working by night
in the 15 mile pound". He's got "a big load of spelter for Birmigum
bound" so presumably he's on the GU, but we can't think where there's a
15 mile pound on that run.

Can anyone relieve my ignorance?

Not the Grand Union, Bruce, but there's a 15 mile pound on the K&A. Perhaps he
was going to do a Chris Collins & reach Brum via Bristol!
