Yes, I did look at these recently.  Pricey, as you say.  Only produces
800w, so couldn't power major appliances directly - again as you say,
one must use a big battery bank and inverter.

Does produces lots of hot water though!

I found this canalworld post interesting, from June 2007.  It's from
Gary Peacock of Ledgard Bridge Boats:

"We fitted the first Whispergen on a narrowboat 4 years ago, the owner
is now in the process of removing it!
