Actually I could possibly do that as the genny has a cycle tolerance 
in the regulator of something like +10% and -5% on revs and the 
engine revs don't have to be that high as it is a four-phase machine 
requiring only 1500 generator rpm to hit the required 50Hz on the 
Hertz meter. From memory the engine only has to run at about 800 rpm 
to generate 50Hz and 230 V. So, at the tickover speed of many modern 
engines my old Gardner is happily generating AC. The gearbox is a PRM 
500, well over-specced, so I would have no hesitation in putting it 
into and out of gear at 800 rpm. It might be a little lively out of 
the canal locks though at 800. I'm not sure how I'd explain to M that 
I hadn't stopped for her to finish closing the lock.....hey, now 
that's an idea ;-))))
