Hi Dave

Given you've only got a "short break" not a full week, then what you can
do is going to depend on how long days you want to do. With children,
my first thought is to head for Braunston and then turn left through
Braunston locks and Braunston tunnel (the children will love that!).
You can turn to go back easily at Norton Junction with the Leicester
line of the GU or, if you do longer days and have time, you could go on
through Blisworth tunnel to Stoke Bruerne and the Waterways Museum and
the excellent Boat pub.

To be honest, I'm not sure you'll have time to get that far and back.
For route planning may I suggest Nick's Canal planner (an on-line route
planner rather like autoroute for the canals!)

a truly excellent freely available resource run by a member of this
list.

This gives Rugby to Stoke Bruerne as 2 x 7 hour days so in a 4 day break
you "could" do it in 1 1/2 x 10 hour days giving a free day in SB if you
have a 4 day break.

Cheers
