Thanks for that insight Ron. It's the "get it burning" bit that to 
me makes it safer than petrol.

Having said that, I still prefer petrol engined motor cars to diesel 
ones. I hate the mess people leave behind at filling stations by 
trying to cram the last drop of diesel fuel into their tanks. Then 
there is the danger of having such a slippery liquid underfeet, and 
the mess it makes of one's shoes, carpets etc.
