I've a Magellan eXplorist 500. Avoid Magellans like the plague. The units are fine and do exactly what they say - but anything else is a PITA. The basemap is *very* basic. There's *used* to be a "MapSend Topo UK" for Magellan - discontinued as it was a hefty £150+ for the software alone. I use mine with Memory Map and put on the footpaths I want to follow. For best use of the eXplorists one needs the 2.57 firmware, *but* not all units will upgrade - and some turn into bricks when you try (mine was a litle techy at upgrading but it worked fine in the end)! Customer Support is flaky to say the least. They seem to be cutting back on the handhelds in favour of car type ones and their professional range. If you can live with one out of the box - fine, even better if one can locate a set of Memory Maps - the battery life is fantastic - 17 hours with the backlight on low. There are Yahoo forums for all these GPSs - try there for some home truths.
