For a while we have used the AVG virus protection without any problem,
however they are now saying that unless we pay £40 they will no longer issue
updates. Has anyone any recommendations about other free systems before we
rob a bank?

Try http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html It's free.

I have been using it for years. Updates are almost daily and are automatic.
