You are mis-reading the messages from AVG! AVG has moved on a version, 
so the free version moves on from version 7 to version 8. You need to 
update your free version to version 8, as they will stop supporting 
version 7.

Version 8 includes anti-spyware and a "link scanner" that warns you if 
any links from a web page or search result are to unsafe sites.

I upgraded to Free version 8 without paying £40, so I recommend that you 
do the same. If you have previously been satisfied with AVG the latest 
version is even better.

Of course, they try to get you to upgrade to a paid-for version but 
there is no need to do that.
